Steve Kimmons Conducting The Maplewood Community Music Board of Trustees is pleased to announce that Steve Kimmons has joined us as the new musical director of the Maplewood Community Concert Band. Steve comes to us with an strong background in music leadership as well as an extensive professional career in horn performance. He was principal horn for both the New Holland Band and the Bainbridge Band in Pennsylvania, served as principal horn and board member of the the Prince George's Philharmonic in Maryland, and founded and led the New Carrollton Band both as the Music Director and as Board Chairman.

His six-year career in the United States Air Force included assignments as Deputy Commander and Associate Conductor of the Strategic Air Command Band, Offutt Air Force Base, near Omaha, Nebraska; and Commander and Conductor of the Eighth Air Force Band, Barksdale Air Force Base, near Shreveport, LA. While at Barksdale, his squadron presented 1,568 performances to well over 4,000,000 audience members in 21 states, Great Britain, and Wales.

After leaving the USAF, Steve worked as Director of Alumni Relations for several colleges, was an Executive Director at CSS Fundraising and is currently the Director of Development for the American Theater Group in Rahway, New Jersey. Steve replaces Tom McGee who, after five years with the band, announced he would be stepping down at the end of the 2013 - 2014 season. We thank Tom for all his contributions to the Concert Band as well as the organization as a whole.

We are looking forward to seeing what Steve will bring to both the concert band and to the entire organization.

A special thank you goes out to the Conductor Search Committee for all their hard work in attracting and evaluating highly qualified candidates and presenting their recommendation.

Our 2013 - 2014 season has come to an end. Thank you to all who attended our performances,
volunteered their time in our bands/ensembles, and otherwise lended their support to our organization this season.

Note-worthy News!

Tom McGee March 13, 2014 — We are sad to announce that Tom McGee, the musical director of the Maplewood Community Concert Band, will be stepping down at the end of our 2013 - 2014 season. Tom joined the organization in 2009 and for five seasons he brought the best out of our musicians and lended his expertise to the organization in so many ways. Tom's last concert will be our Outdoor Summer Concert on Sunday, July 20 at the Maplewood Memorial Park Amphitheatre.

Please join us in wishing Tom all the best in his future pursuits and we do hope he will come back and join us as a player from time to time.

May 13, 2014 — MCM officially announces its 7th instrumental ensemble, Swingville. A smaller sibling of Swing Town, our big band, Swingville is the name used by any jazz combo formed from Maplewood Community Music's pool of skilled volunteer jazz musicians and vocalists. Swingville can be found performing at various community events throughout the year such as at Maplewood's Art Walk & Music Fest and South Orange's Downtown After Sundown summer jazz series and more.

All advanced jazz players are welcome to join the Swingville pool of amateur musicians that support our communities through music enrichment and inspiration. Rehearsals take place at 4:30 p.m. on the 2nd Sunday of the month at the DeHart Community Center, 120 Burnett Ave, Maplewood. For more information, please contact Susan Williams.

May 5, 2014 — The Silvertones, MCM's flute choir, performed for the students at South Mountain Elementary. For all six lunch periods, the choir entertained everyone with popular selections including "Hakuna Matata" from "The Lion King" and "Hedwig's Theme" from the "Harry Potter" movies. Calling All Musicians!
Join the Maplewood Community Concert Band!

We invite all woodwind, brass & percussion musicians, especially hobbyists, regardless of age or skill level, to join our community band. Though high school level playing experience is recommended, we welcome currently active musicians as well as those who have had a long absence from playing. There are no auditions and quite a few members joined after a 5, 10 and even 25 year break from playing.

We have room for ALL band instruments with a particular need for oboe, clarinets,
trumpets, horns, tuba and percussion (esp. timpani & mallets).
